While at first glance AllTrails seems to be a benign application that provides a great deal of value to users, there are a number of issues that my fellow admins and I have noticed over the years that have caused us to take a stance against the use of AllTrails in our groups. In this post, I’ll explore the problems with AllTrails and discuss some of the alternatives that are available.

I’m sure by now it’s no surprise that I’m addicted to visiting the many waterfalls that can be found across Kentucky. One of the most common questions I get asked when I share an image of a waterfall is how you can get to the particular falls. Like many landscape photographers these days, I rarely give out specific information about where a photo was taken. This is to help protect these areas from abuse and overcrowding.

This is a skill that is critically important for anyone who plans on venturing out into the backcountry. Not only is it important that you always carry a paper, hard-copy map of where you will be going, but it’s also important that you know how to read it!

Today, I was talking to a friend, and it came to my attention that he was unaware of CalTopo. This individual in question is an avid off-trail explorer in The Red River Gorge. It blew my mind that he had never heard of what is probably one of the greatest mapping utilities ever made for the backcountry explorer! So, today we are going to right this atrocity and take a look at just what CalTopo is and how we can use it.
